My Cottage

Spring is fast approaching as I’m seeing buds on trees.
My back door is open and I am breathing the fresh lake air. The air is a little cooler but it is, also, that clean.
I was disappointed that the sunset last night was clouded but, that’s New England weather. The birds are clearly singing, because they, too, know what’s in store during this next season.
The temperature is supposed to reach 55 degrees today. I see the fire pit in the yard from the couch in my living room where the back door is located and it is open to it’s screen.
I’m considering starting the first fire of the season. I crave fire.
I love the flame, the crackle, the smell of the burning wood, the dancing of the flames and the warmth on my hands. The translucent waves of heat as they passively rise are mesmerizing.
My home has been redecorated throughout with old, repurposed barnwood. Along the ceilings, in the living room, bedroom and kitchen, the wood is braced by hand hewn oak.
This is my own little cottage.
On the couch, inside the cottage, door wide open, I see the fire pit and the sunset. I will walk out to the lake as the day warms.
Yesterday, a backhoe took down shrubbery that once blocked my view. Now, I need only walk 5 feet from my door for a perfect view.
The restaurant next door has a friendly bar room. Their menu and their table service is great. I like the sangria when I’m at Lakeview. It’s covered with fruit which is a decent snack at times.
In the summer, I can sit out on the patio and listen to live music. The rest of the year, on Thursdays, there’s generally local musicians indoors.
From there, the Lakeview dining room, I can ,again, see the water. The windows, and part of the seating area, are directly over the lake.
There are blinds on every window that can be closed when the evening sun begins to set at eye level.
I can see the houses on the street up which I often walk. Lined up along the hill, they can be intriguing.
I’d be inspired by them except that I have the perfect little cottage, wood fire pit, lake and breeze, and year long sunset right here in my lap.
When I first moved in, it was fall and I viewed the colorful lake from here. Today, spring birds are singing the sound of the country side while announcing that spring is here.
The tree, in the picture above, is a weeping Katsura which is known for its unique fragrances. I’ve heard maple, caramel, burnt sugar, toffee apple, gingerbread or cake tree. One week of little flowers into bronze or burgundy leaves, during spring, that become a blue-green during summer and into butter yellow heart shape leaves in the fall.
This tree is new to me. I read about it in a book, Some of Us Just Fall by Polly Atkin. She speaks of a unique medical condition that is difficult to diagnose and her lifeline of dismissals and misdiagnoses.
She also speaks highly of nature and this tree is often featured. This tree is new to me and I would love to find one. Shallow roots make it vulnerable to wind which leaves me to wonder if, near the lake and breezes, might not be the place to plant one. It may not even grow in this growing zone.
It’s a beautiful day and I am going out to walk the lake. I will be looking and hopeful.
Why am I happier here than I have ever been before? Can you imagine the sunset, hear the birds, feel the fires warmth, breathe in the cool fresh air, look up at hand hewn beams, all from your living room couch? I then close the door and know that this place, under this proverbial umbrella tree, is where I can find my own window of tolerance.
Here in my own little cottage on my own little corner of the lake.
We hear you,
deMichelle
